With a government shutdown looming (again), leaders in the House and Senate have agreed to a $1.3 trillion spending bill. Once signed and sealed, the package will fund the government through September.
What’s in it? Here are a few items:
- It includes an additional 80-billion-dollars in defense spending – for a total of $160-billion.
- An increase in domestic spending by $128-billion over the 2011 sequestration budget caps
- More than $10 billion more toward infrastructure projects to improve highways, airports, railroads and bridges.
- $1.6 billion in border security, which includes millions for 33-miles of new border fencing – not a concrete wall (though that was already authorized through the 2006 Secure Fence Act).
- More than $2 billion in new money toward mental health and school safety programs.
- What’s NOT included? Protections for immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children, something Democrats hoped to have in the bill.
