16-Year-Old Delivers Aunt’s Baby

A 16-year-old girl on Saturday appreciated the fact that listening to her teachers is beneficial. Morlie Hayes, of Eden, Utah, only just learned about labor in a child development class, so this past weekend she was very sure of what to do when her aunt went into labor earlier than expected. Mom Laura Creager said that her baby was due on 19th May, but she began to experience strong contractions when she was on her way to a friend’s house. Realizing she was closer to Hayes’s house, she went there with her 7-year-old daughter.

After Creager’s water broke, Hayes remained calm as she dialed 911 and did what the dispatcher instructed her to do. She got towels, a shoelace and a safety pin. She also remembered the major points she learned in class, such as ensuring the umbilical cord wasn’t tangled and the child had normal coloring. After the ambulance arrived, it was Hayes who was washing off the baby. Afterwards after the family came, she was the one to sign the birth certificate. Hayes told the newspaper that it was an amazing experience.
