Google Searches For Sleep Hit Record High In 2023

Are you hoping this will finally be the year you get restful sleep as you toss and turn in bed? Millions of Americans do, but the struggle to get the quality ZZZs we need is all too real for many of us. In fact, new research from the Sleep Foundation reveals that 37% of U.S. adults slept “somewhat” or “much” worse in 2023 than ever before.

While a lot of adults find it more difficult to sleep well as they get older, it’s actually GenZ that tops the list for sleep challenges in this study. It also reveals that Google searches for the word “sleep” hit an all-time high in 2023.

So what are all these sleepy Americans doing to help them snooze better?

  • Trying hacks like showering before bed (45%), exercising more (27%), using a weighted blanket (26%), keeping a bedroom window open (26%).
  • A quarter also avoided caffeine in the evenings and 19% even turned off their phones when they went to bed in an effort to improve sleep.
  • Some turned to products to try to get to sleep, including comfortable pillows (40%), quality sheets (24%), and even a new mattress (23%).
