Dogs are known as “man’s best friend” and they’re so beloved, more than 49-million American households have one as a pet. They come in all sizes, from tiny Yorkshire terriers to enormous Great Danes, and while everyone has their own favorite, new research reveals the most popular dog breeds in the country.

  • new report from “U.S. News & World Report” analyzes data from the pet insurance industry to determine the most popular dog breeds in each state.
  • Chihuahuas, the “toy” breed from Mexico, are the most popular breed overall. They account for 4% of all dogs in the U.S. and are the most popular breed in 21 states, but they’re most popular in New Mexico, where they make up 7% of pets in the state.
  • The French bulldog is the second most popular breed overall, and it's the top dog in California, Florida and Hawaii.
  • Golden retrievers come in third, and are the most popular breed in 15 states, especially the northeast. Vermont is home to the most golden retrievers, followed by New Hampshire and Maine.
  • Less popular pooches include beagles, Boston terriers, rottweilers and mini poodles.
