Millennials Would Take A 20% Pay Cut For Better Work-Life Balance

Workers around the world are reevaluating what’s important and money isn’t at the top of their list. The results of Ford’s 2024 trends survey are out, suggesting that American millennials are over hustle culture. The poll of more than 16-thousand people in 16 countries finds that while employees care about their jobs and their paychecks, what they really want is better work-life balance.

The trends survey reports:

  • More than three-quarters (77%) of respondents worldwide say they prioritize a balanced personal life over their advancement at work.
  • Around 60% of American millennials would be willing to take a 20% pay cut to “achieve a lifestyle that prioritizes my quality of life.”
  • That’s 5% more than the global average and more than any other generation of Americans. Only a third of baby boomers would take that salary cut, while 43% of Gen X and 56% of Gen Z would.
  • The only countries with more millennials willing to take 20% less pay to prioritize work-life balance are Thailand with 70% and India with 69%.
  • When asked if a job that increases personal stress is worth it, 79% of boomers say it’s not, followed by 72% of Gen X, 63% of millennials and 66% of Gen Z.
