A Quarter Of People Consider Scrolling Through Social Media A Hobby

How do you like to spend your free time? Some folks can’t get enough of the great outdoors and all the hiking, biking and sports they can enjoy outside, while others prefer traveling, dancing or going to museums. There are all sorts of hobbies to enjoy in your down time, but does spending time on social media count? New research suggests a lot of people think it does.

A new survey of 4-thousand people in the U.K. finds:

  • About a quarter (24%) of them consider scrolling through social media a genuine hobby.
  • Four in 10 admit that they spend the majority of their spare time watching TV and scrolling and 10% say they don’t have any other hobbies.
  • A third of respondents realize that the amount of time they spend on social media is preventing them from pursuing their other interests.
  • But 32% feel screen scrolling helps them relax and cope with the stresses of life, while 20% say it’s a cheap way to spend their free time.
  • Sadly, 16% of those polled confess they don’t do any outdoor activities at all.
  • But 59% admit they do want to try something new and 38% want to break their scrolling habit and they’re actively trying to spend less time on social media.
  • Nearly a quarter (23%) are even considering getting rid of Instagram, TikTok and all of their social media to help encourage them to do other things.
