STUDY: TOO MUCH CALCIUM CAN UP RISK OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE DEATH: As they get older, women are warned about the risk of having too little calcium in their diets and are urged to take supplements if they need them. But a new study is warning that too much calcium can actually double a woman's risk of death from cardiovascular disease. Swedish researchers found that in a study of more than 60,000 women over 19 years, the majority who died did so due to cardiovascular disease, and the highest rates of death were among women whose calcium intake was higher than 1,400 mg a day, either from supplements or a combination or food and supplements, but not from food alone. Those women were twice as likely to die as women getting between 600 and 999 mg. However, those getting less than 600 mg of calcium a day also had an increased risk of death. The Mayo Clinic's Dr. Bart Clarke, a member of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, told Yahoo! Shine that calcium seems to be absorbed too quickly, especially in the form of supplements. He advises that since calcium from diet doesn't seem to increase risk, it's best to try to reach the daily recommendations for calcium via food, such as cheese, yogurt, broccoli, almonds, tofu, sardines and leafy greens. He also said that beyond food, supplements would be okay as long as you don't go over the recommended daily allowance.
